1/6/14

1/5/14

It is a Sunday night and school was called off for tomorrow yesterday because of the prediction of extreme cold--negative 20 or lower and wind chills below negative 50.
I don't know how the animals can live through this kind of cold.
I also found out that there will be a meeting of the Parks and Rec Committee in town and they will be discussing hunting in the city parks of Webb ( Popple Nature Area and Smith Conservancy).  I plan to attend.

12/26/13

The snow is beautiful.  Yesterday I connected with a mom and fawn--The Fawn was frolicking in the snow and the mom was watching him/her.  Then they just grazed.  They saw me.  I was standing very still, I waved to them slowly and they still stayed still.  I waved more and they started coming toward me--It was wonderful.  Then some dogs barked and spooked them.  They ran away.  I was impressed and touched by their interest and curiosity and connection with each other.

December 15th

We have snow and there are lots of tracks in the woods.  We don't have a lot of snow, maybe 3 inches or less but kindergartners had a great time on Friday using snowshoes.  It was cold but I didn't hear any complaints.  We saw: deer tracks, coyote tracks, skunk tracks, mouse tracks and we think Beaver tracks.  We also saw great ice under the bridge and by the spring.  It was a great trip.

12/30/13

It was negative 17 this morning.  I don't know how things around here can live in this cold.  The snow was crusty and hard to cross country ski on.  It was not fun.  Bob said listen to the birds--I did not have my hearing aids in so I could not hear anything.

10/29/13

This is October 29th and it was a TWO SNAKE Day!   Wow.  The kids said they saw more snakes and I did not believe them but then we did find two large Garters--it was great.  The first one I picked up and it was quite aggressive and bitting me,  it did draw blood.  The kids all wanted to touch it.  It just so happened we were talking about scents (deer giving/leaving scents on the ground and on trees and then I let the kids smell my hand after holding the snake.

10/12/13

Yesterday while biking with third graders from St. Peters we saw many more snakes than usual:  Brown Snakes, Red Bellies and Garter.  About a dozen in all along the way.
We also saw two huge puff balls, lots of walnuts and Hickories.
